Clementine File Server

The Clementine File Server is part of the Naval Research Laboratory's continuing effort to make the 1.8 million image Clementine data set available in it's entirety to a wide variety of users. This section of NRL's Clementine World Wide Web presence provides access to hundreds of thousands of images in a directory like structure.

--- Enter the Data Set ---

Navigating to the Data

This interface allows you to make multiple parallel paths through the Clementine data tree simultaneouslySimultaneously. Please keep in mind that this is a very large data set and broad search parameters will yield a huge list of files. The are four steps down to the data. Please read all the documentation. (It only takes a few minutes. I promise. ;) When you're ready to begin jump to the orbits page by pressing Enter the Data above.

Orbits

The top level directory groups the data by the orbit in which it was gathered. For the most part orbits were longitudinal.

Sensors

Once an particular orbit has been selected then the corresponding data is grouped by the sensor which acquired it. In most cases not all of the six sensors aboard Clementine were used for a given location on the moon. The Ultraviolet/Visible camera will be of most interest to casual visitors.

Latitude Bins

Now that both the orbit and sensor have been chosen the data is grouped by it's location on the moon's surface. The first directory contains data for 90 degrees South up to 80 degrees South. The second contains data for 80 degrees South to 70 degrees South... and so forth and so on. There will often be bins labeled Sky these are images gathered right before or just after a mapping pass of the moon.

PDS Files

After indicating orbit sensor and latitude bin you (finally ;) come to a list of actual data. It will be a list of files in the Planetary Data Systems (PDS) format. At this point you can access the data in a number of ways (described below) including viewing them as GIFs through your web browser.

Accessing the Data

Once you've navigated to some particular file of interest you have a few options. The Clementine File Server allows you to download any of the files in there official Planetary Data Systems (PDS) format. If you'd rather view the image through your web browser there is also an option to have any PDS file converted into a GIF and then downloaded. The PDS file format has significant information about the image such as Latitude, Longitude, angle of light source etc. While this is received when downloading the PDS file it can also be extracted and viewed through a web browser. There is also software available for processing and displaying the Clementine PDS files on a variety of platforms.
