Shared Resource Centers Information for NRL

THE NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY

The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is located in Washington, D.C. and its mission is to conduct a broadly based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved materials, techniques, equipment, systems and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences, and related technologies. NRL is the Navy's Corporate Research Laboratory, and it reports to the Chief of Naval Research.

CENTER FOR COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE

The Center for Computational Science (CCS), located in the Information Technology Division, provides research as well as operational computation and network support at NRL. The mission of the CCS is to provide state-of-the-art scientific scalable computing in support of basic and applied research at NRL and throughout the Department of Defense (DoD). Presently several different scalable architectures are available:

RESOURCE ALLOCATIONS

Requests for high performance computing (HPC) services may be made with the HPCMP Application Form.

VISITORS

Visitors to the Naval Research Laboratory's Center for Computational Science will find a campus environment, located in Southwest Washington, D.C. close to both Oxon Hill, Maryland and Alexandria, Virginia. Driving time to National Airport is about 15 minutes; 45 minutes to Dulles Airport. There are campus eating facilities within walking distance of the facility, and although there are no on-site accommodations at NRL, there are several commercial motels located within a 15-minute drive of the facility. Public transportation to NRL is limited; therefore, car rental is recommended for extended visits. Visitor desk space with access to consultants is available.

HARDWARE

The Altix 3000 has 128 Intel IA-64 processors with 256 GB of main memory and 1.1 TB of scratch disk. . The Cray XD1 has 874 processors, 1728 GB of main memory and 30 TB of scratch disk.

OPERATING SYSTEMS & SOFTWARE

The scalable systems run the latest UNIX operating system and support C, Fortran 90, OpenMP, and MPI. The systems also support the Andrew File System (AFS) and Kerberos.

NETWORKS

The CCS has network connectivity to the Defense Research and Engineering Network (DREN), and to an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network (ATDnet). NRL is spanned by NICEnet.

VISUALIZATION SUPPORT

Graphical capabilities include a variety of graphics and multimedia workstations, including a four processor SGI Onyx workstation; betacam and VHS recording equipment; DVD editing either using Sonic Solutions professional DVD or Apple's DVD Studio Pro; software packages, including AVS, Data Explorer and Khoros; hard copy capabilities include color transparencies.

CONSULTING

The CCS provides one-on-one consultation during code development, parallelization, and debugging and temporary desk space for visiting users. Consultation is also provided via email to 'ccshelp@nrl.navy.mil' and by phone at (202)404-7337.

NRL-DC SERVICE/AGENCY APPROVAL AUTHORITY

Portia Shingler and Jeanie Osburn serve as NRL-DC's Service/Agency Approval Authority (S/AAA). Among other duties, the S/AAA assists NRL-DC in the call for proposals, establishing allocations and accounts at the MSRC's and other DC's, publishing NRL-DC usage reports, publishing the annual reports, and coordinating NRL-DC user group meetings. For S/AAA announcements and for more information of interest to NRL-DC users of DoD HPCMP, see the NRL DC HPCMP Support page page.

TRAINING

HPC users have a variety of training options available through the DoD HPCMP Programming Environment & Training (PET).
